No two people have exactly the same creative process. That's why we've provided 3 different Cubase and Logic templates for the Berlin Free Orchestra. Here's some additional info about what makes these templates different and how to use them. And if you’re looking for the downloads, you can find them right here.

Contents of the downloads

Each download contains 3 different templates as well as Expression Map and Articulation Set files for each instrument. Each template is designed to suit a different composing style: They all have the same balanced sound, but provide different ways of switching between the instruments' articulations—see below for more info. If you aren't sure which one to use, we suggest you simply try them all and find the one you like best.

Please note: You'll need a licensed version of Cubase Pro (13 or later) or Logic (11.1 or later) to use these templates.

Folder 01—the Keyswitch template

In the Keyswitch template, each instrument has its own track and you control which articulation is triggered by pressing the specified keys on your MIDI keyboard. This is useful for those who like to keep the total number of tracks low and are comfortable switching articulations on the fly. If you have a very small MIDI keyboard, or if you write music by adding notes with the mouse, you may prefer one of the other templates.

Folder 02—the Expression Map or Articulation Sets template

Folder 02 contains the templates for Expression Maps (Cubase) and Articulation Sets (Logic). Expression maps and Articulation Sets are dropdown menus located in the MIDI editor/piano roll you can use to assign specific articulations to MIDI notes. Articulations can be selected on a note by note basis, and when you use the dropdown, it automatically creates the keyswitch information in your DAW.

Folder 03—the Single Articulations template

In the Single Articulations template, every articulation is on a separate track. This way, you know that every note on a given track will use the articulation you want. Those who prefer this kind of template find it easier to see at a glance which articulation is being used at any moment, and you never have to worry about using the keyswitches or manually selecting articulations later.

Folder 04—instrument Expression Maps or Articulation Sets

What if you want to create your own template, or just update an existing template, and you also want to use Expression Maps or Articulation Sets? Good news, folder 04 contains the Expression Map or Articulation Set files for each instrument in the orchestra, meaning you can quickly and easily create your own custom template.
